Kagoshima
Kagoshima occupies the southern tip of Kyushu and includes many islands. The active volcano Sakurajima, still emitting smoke, is a symbol of the city. It is the birthplace of many figures who shaped the Meiji Restoration, such as Saigo Takamori. Kagoshima is also known for products like Berkshire pork and sweet-potato shochu, and for the natural World Heritage site of Yakushima.

Sakurajima is a still-active volcano rising in Kagoshima Bay. Frequently sending up plumes of smoke, it is a symbol of the city, and the way residents live alongside its falling ash is a sight unique to this region.

Kagoshima, the old Satsuma domain, was one of the centers that led the Meiji Restoration. It is known for producing many great figures who contributed enormously to Japan's modernization, foremost among them Saigo Takamori, fondly called "Saigo-don."

Kagoshima is famous for its premium "Kagoshima Berkshire pork," tender and sweet, enjoyed in shabu-shabu and tonkatsu. "Imo-jochu," a shochu distilled from sweet potatoes, is another signature product of the prefecture.

Yakushima is an island of abundant nature lying to the south of the prefecture. Ancient forests spread across it, including the giant "Jomon Sugi" cedar said to be thousands of years old, and its precious nature earned it inscription as a Natural World Heritage site.
