Saga
Saga lies in the northwest of Kyushu. It is world-renowned as a home of pottery, including Arita ware and Imari ware. Its cuisine—Yobuko squid and Saga beef—is also popular. Saga is famous too for the Yoshinogari Ruins, a large Yayoi-period settlement site, and for its autumn hot-air balloon festival.

The area around Arita in Saga is the "birthplace of porcelain" in Japan, where it was first produced. Beautifully painted Arita and Imari wares were exported to Europe in the Edo period and have long been highly prized around the world.

Yobuko, facing the Genkai Sea, is famous for its translucent, freshly prepared live squid sashimi. "Saga beef," a premium brand prized for its fine marbling, is another delicacy that represents the prefecture.

The Yoshinogari Ruins are the remains of a large Yayoi-period settlement. A moated village with watchtowers has been reconstructed, making it a valuable history park where visitors can learn how people lived as rice farming spread.

Each autumn, Saga City hosts the Saga International Balloon Fiesta, one of Asia's largest hot-air balloon events. The sight of colorful balloons rising into the sky together is beautiful, drawing large crowds of spectators.
