Iwate
Iwate is Japan's second-largest prefecture after Hokkaido. At the World Heritage site of Hiraizumi stands the golden Konjikido hall of Chuson-ji, preserving the once-flourishing Buddhist culture. Its Pacific Sanriku coast is a rich, deeply indented fishing ground, and it is also the home of the poet Kenji Miyazawa.

Hiraizumi in southern Iwate flourished under the Oshu Fujiwara clan in the Heian period. Its gold-leaf-covered Konjikido hall is famous, and the site is inscribed as World Heritage embodying Pure Land Buddhist ideals.

Iwate's famous "wanko soba" is eaten in a distinctive style: small bowls of noodles are served one after another until you are full. Morioka cold noodles and jajamen are also beloved local dishes.

The Sanriku Coast on the Pacific is a scenic stretch of deeply indented rias shoreline. Its calm bays form rich fishing grounds, offering fresh seafood such as wakame seaweed, sea urchin, and oysters.

Iwate is the home of Kenji Miyazawa, poet and author of "Night on the Galactic Railroad." In the Tono area, folk tales of kappa and zashiki-warashi spirits recorded in "The Legends of Tono" are still passed down today.
