Nara
Nara is a landlocked Kansai prefecture. Once the site of the Heijo-kyo capital, it flourished as a center of Japanese politics and culture and is a true ancient capital. It holds many World Heritage sites, including Todai-ji—famous for the Great Buddha of Nara—and Horyu-ji, said to be the world's oldest wooden building. The deer of Nara Park are also beloved.

Nara Park is home to over a thousand wild deer. Long cherished as messengers of the gods, the deer are used to people, and feeding them "shika senbei" crackers is hugely popular with visitors from Japan and abroad.

Horyu-ji was founded in the Asuka period as a temple associated with Prince Shotoku. Regarded as the world's oldest surviving wooden structure, it conveys precious Buddhist culture and was among the first sites in Japan inscribed as World Heritage.

Kaki-no-ha sushi is a Nara specialty of vinegared rice topped with mackerel and wrapped in a persimmon leaf. Said to have arisen from ways to preserve fish in a place far from the sea, its refined flavor also makes it a favorite souvenir.
