Niigata lies on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. One of Japan's foremost rice regions, it is known for the Koshihikari brand and for the sake brewed from that rice. Its heavy-snow winters make skiing popular, and Sado Island off its coast is home to the World Heritage gold mines.

Niigata is famed as "snow country," where heavy snow falls in winter. That snow becomes a rich water resource supporting rice and sake, while areas such as Echigo-Yuzawa draw crowds to their excellent ski slopes.
