日本にほんの八やっつの地方ちほうThe eight regions of Japan

47の都道府県とどうふけんは、八やっつの地方ちほうにまとめて呼よばれます。これは行政ぎょうせい上じょうの区分くぶんではなく、権限けんげんを持もつ役所やくしょがあるわけでもありませんが、天気てんき予報よほうから学校がっこうの教科書きょうかしょ、鉄道てつどうの路線ろせん図ずまで、日常にちじょうのいたるところで使つかわれています。Japan's 47 prefectures are usually spoken about in eight regions. The grouping is conventional rather than administrative — no region has a government of its own — but it is the division that weather forecasts, school textbooks, rail maps and ordinary conversation all actually use.

北海道ほっかいどう· Hokkaido

北海道ほっかいどうは日本にほんの最もっとも北きたにある島しまで、一ひとつの道どうがそのまま一ひとつの地方ちほうを成なしています。日本にほんの国土こくどのおよそ五ご分ぶんの一いちを占しめ、深ふかい雪ゆきと広ひろい農地のうち、そして海うみの幸さちで知しられています。Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost island, and the only region made up of a single prefecture. It accounts for about a fifth of the country's land area, and is known for deep snow, wide farmland and seafood.

北海道Hokkaido

東北とうほく· Tohoku

東北とうほく地方ちほうは本州ほんしゅうの北部ほくぶにあり、六むっつの県けんから成なります。冬ふゆの雪ゆきが深ふかく、夏なつには各地かくちで大おおきな祭まつりが開ひらかれ、米こめと酒さけの産地さんちとしても知しられています。Tohoku is the northern third of Honshu, made up of six prefectures. Its winters are heavy with snow, its summers carry some of Japan's largest festivals, and it is one of the country's principal rice and sake regions.

関東かんとう· Kanto

関東かんとう地方ちほうには東京とうきょう都とをはじめ七ななつの都県とけんがあり、日本にほんの人口じんこうのおよそ三さん分ぶんの一いちが暮くらしています。広ひろい関東平野かんとうへいやに都市としが続つづき、政治せいじと経済けいざいの中心ちゅうしんとなっています。Kanto holds seven prefectures including Tokyo, and roughly a third of Japan's population. Cities run almost continuously across the broad Kanto Plain, making it the political and economic centre of the country.

中部ちゅうぶ· Chubu

中部ちゅうぶ地方ちほうは本州ほんしゅうの中央ちゅうおう部ぶに位置いちし、九ここのつの県けんから成なります。日本にほんアルプスの険けわしい山々やまやまと富士山ふじさんを抱かかえ、日本海にほんかい側がわと太平洋たいへいよう側がわとで気候きこうが大おおきく異ことなります。Chubu is the middle of Honshu, with nine prefectures — more than any other region. It contains the Japanese Alps and Mount Fuji, and its Sea of Japan and Pacific coasts have markedly different climates.

関西かんさい· Kansai

関西かんさい地方ちほうは七ななつの府県ふけんから成なり、古代こだいから長ながく日本にほんの中心ちゅうしんであった京都きょうとと奈良ならを含ふくみます。独特どくとくの言葉ことばと食しょくの文化ぶんかでも知しられています。Kansai's seven prefectures include Kyoto and Nara, two former capitals. It was the centre of Japan for centuries, and remains distinct in its dialect and its food.

中国ちゅうごく· Chugoku

中国ちゅうごく地方ちほうは本州ほんしゅうの西にしの端はしにあり、五いつつの県けんから成なります。穏おだやかな瀬戸内海せとないかいに面めんする南側みなみがわと、日本海にほんかいに面めんする北側きたがわとに分わかれ、出雲いずもや広島ひろしまなど歴史れきしの深ふかい土地とちが並ならびます。Chugoku is the western end of Honshu, with five prefectures. It divides between a mild Seto Inland Sea coast in the south and a rougher Sea of Japan coast in the north, and holds places as historically weighty as Izumo and Hiroshima.

四国しこく· Shikoku

四国しこくは四よっつの県けんから成なる、日本にほんの主要しゅような島しまの中なかで最もっとも小ちいさい島しまです。八はち十じゅう八はちか所しょの霊場れいじょうをたどる遍路へんろで知しられ、山やまが険けわしく、四方しほうを海うみに囲かこまれています。Shikoku is the smallest of Japan's four main islands and holds four prefectures. It is best known for the 88-temple pilgrimage that circles it, and is mountainous throughout and ringed entirely by sea.

九州・沖縄きゅうしゅう・おきなわ· Kyushu & Okinawa

九州きゅうしゅう・沖縄おきなわ地方ちほうは八やっつの県けんから成なり、日本にほんの南西なんせいに広ひろがっています。火山かざんと温泉おんせんが多おおく、沖縄おきなわは琉球りゅうきゅう王国おうこく以来いらいの独自どくじの文化ぶんかを今いまに伝つたえています。Kyushu and Okinawa together make up Japan's southwest, with eight prefectures between them. Volcanoes and hot springs are everywhere, and Okinawa carries the distinct culture of the former Ryukyu Kingdom.
